Training

In this section you will find out what training has to be undertaken to become a full crew member, also giving an insight into what a new trainee crew members has to learn and when they have become a full crew member - the training does not stop there.

Training is given to all crew members on a regular basis, to keep the crew members up to date with changes or to refresh on skills that are used when ever the station gets a shout and new trainee crew members will have to learn these high standards to become full crew members.

To become a trainee crew member you do not need any qualifications, just the involvement in team work and up for anything attitude.

 

 

All crew are fully trained in all aspects of sea rescue.

The training is provided by fully trained crew members, taking an average of three months and a probation period before becoming a full crew member.

CREW COMPETENCIES

1. FIRST AID

STCW95 MCA category C

 

2. SHORE BASED SKILLS

Basic Requirement for operational crew -

Boat Knowledge.

Ropes & knots.

Boat / Matbro maintenance.

 

3. VHF RADIO

To operate VHF all crew must pass a RYA, VHF GMDS exam.

- Which is certificated.

 

4. SEAMANSHIP

Operational crew require -

Navigation.

Rules of the road.

Chart work.

Compass work.

Course plotting.

GPS knowledge.

Radar familiarity.

VHF Radio protocol specific to HMCG

Tidal work.

Buoyage - Shapes / Lights / Day / Night / All weather

RYA level 2.

 

5. BOAT BASED SKILLS

Operational crew require -

Boat launch & recovery.

Anchoring techniques.

Towing techniques.

Capsize Drill.

M.O.B (Man Over Board)

Casualty recovery / handling.

Boat handling - Power boat course.

Helicopter training.
