Date: Sunday the 30th of August 2009
Service: Sandown & Shanklin Inshore Lifeboat
Type: Two missing males on kayaks
Task Time: 13:20
Weather: SE Force 6 to 7
Other units present: Bembridge Coastguard Team
Whilst on Coxswain training, SSILB were tasked by Solent Coastguard to a 999
call from a family that 2 male adults of 35 years old left Yaverland and had
not been seen for 2 Hours.
Trainee Coxswain, Richard Chantler helmed SSILB to Yaverland (Under the
supervision of Senior Coxswain Mark Birch) where they started a search from
Yaverland and around culver Cliff.
SSILB soon located the missing males and found them washed a shore at the
end of culver.
With the strong winds of force 6 to 7, with heavy swell, the Senior Coxswain
took over the helm of the Inshore Lifeboat due the nature of the task at
hand, as the trainee Coxswain was still a trainee, it was best for him to
view the procedure from a crew members position and take in the procedure.
The senior Coxswain manoeuvred the vessel close in by veering down and
retrieved one of the casualties, with his kayak, SSILB returned him to
Yaverland Beach where he was meet by Bembridge coastguard team and was
checked over.
The other casualty climbed the rocks and made hi way to a sand area, where
he waited for the Inshore Lifeboat to return to assist him back to
Yaverland, two SSILB crew members were dropped off into the swell, where
they then walked back with the casualty, carrying his kayak for him, as he
was very shaken by the experience and was met by the Bembridge coastguard
team.
Both Men were cold but well.
These guys were very lucky, one had capsized and filled his Kayak with water
and was very hard to manoeuvre then drifted and was blown on to Culver
Cliffs, if it was not for the family members concern we could have been
looking at a sad day within the bay.
